The Garden Club of Kentucky and Kentucky State Parks have teamed up to create “Monarch Waystations” across the state. Members of the Garden Club of Kentucky and the Glasgow Garden Club began working with park staff in 2013 to design and install a “Monarch Waystation” at the Barren River Lake State Resort Park. Finishing touches have been completed and it has been officially certified by Monarch Watch. Garden club members and park staff will gather to celebrate and dedicate the garden on Monday, August 14 at 10:00 am below the lodge patio and pool (inside the lodge in the event of rain). Refreshments will be served, and the public is invited.

“Monarch Waystations” are monarch butterfly gardens that provide milkweed, the only plant that monarch caterpillars will eat, nectar producing flowers, and shelter for some of the millions of migrating monarch butterflies. Monarch butterfly habitats are disappearing due to development and the widespread use of herbicides, and gardens like these can provide the resources the butterflies need for their remarkable migration to and from Mexico.

This waystation can be a model for home and community gardeners who would like to help sustain the monarch migration. Anyone can easily create a “Monarch Waystation”-in their yard, workplace, school or along a stretch of road or fence line. There is no size requirement, it could even be planted in pots, but milkweed and nectar flowers are a must.

The Monarch Waystation program was developed by Monarch Watch, a nonprofit education, conservation and research program based at the University of Kansas. Information about butterfly gardening and Monarch Watch will also be available at the dedication.

Welcome to the discussion.
