Instrumental resuscitated from the label's "dead letter office" wherein violin is substituted with slide guitar after student/artist goes "Jackie Paper" out of the program.
Genre: Spiritual: Instrumental Gospel
Release Date: 9/2019
A Scottsville Conservatory violin student introduced this famous hymn to proprietor Johnny Thompson years ago and the two would close nearly every lesson with Thompson chording doublestop voicings beneath the student's melody for years.
Along the way, the two recorded a test demo on the studio's newly acquired Neumann U87i and shortly thereafter began laying the groundwork for its formal recording, often a measure at a time during the last minutes of the student's weekly lesson.
The recorded version wound up being quite the production, featuring full strings, percussion and other assorted instrumentation...ultimately being eschewed by both artist and family management, preceding a subsequent parting of ways from the string program and studio.
Too much work, including a full cello score performed by label artist Kenzie Crowe, had gone into its yearlong recording process to languish in the studio's "Dead Letter Office"...
When the time availed in his scheduling, Thompson re-tracked the melody with slide guitar...an unconventional substitute for the traditional violin of the original draft.
In a grand coincidence/alignment, two artists on opposite ends of the label's spectrum wound up recording this classic piece of Public Domain music and releasing in tandem in September 2019.
