Children across Southern Kentucky joined millions of children across the country to celebrate the twenty-third annual National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America Day on March 2, 2020.

NEA’s Read Across America Day, which celebrates Dr. Seuss’s birthday and the joys of reading, expects more than 45 million readers across America to pick up a book and read on this day.

To honor Dr. Seuss and celebrate the fun and value of reading, many of America's leading literacy, youth and civic groups will bring a nation of readers together for a celebration of reading excitement on this day.

United Way of Southern Kentucky coordinated the following celebrations which included the reading of a Dr. Seuss and other books by a volunteers. Employees from U.S. Bank, Trace Die Cast, Atmos Energy, Logan Aluminum, The J.M. Smucker Co., General Motors, Murphy Construction Group, and other individuals read to children at the following locations:

March 2nd:

ALLEN COUNTY: Allen County Head Start

Allen County Primary Center

BARREN COUNTY: Red Cross Elementary

EDMONDSON COUNTY: South Edmondson Elementary

LOGAN COUNTY: Russellville Head Start

Stevenson Elementary

SIMPSON COUNTY: Franklin Elementary


Emmanuel Daycare

T.C. Cherry Elementary

Wee Care/Family Enrichment Center

The goal of the readings is to show children the joy of reading and join in building a nation of readers - on Read Across America Day and every day. United Way of Southern Kentucky is committed to ensuring that children start school at levels of physical, social-emotional and intellectual development needed for school success. As such, United Way is working to increase BRADD Kindergarten Readiness Scores to 75%. Collaboration with events such as those related to Read Across America Day reinforce United Way’s commitment to this Big Bold Goal.
